Essential Elements of DIRECT Instruction LESSON

 

 

I.      Introduction/ANTICIPATORY SET (3-5 min) 

(“Don’t bring in an Elephant to teach the color gray!” M. Hunter)

·         Provides focus (active involvement/participation of learners)

·         Transfers relevant prior knowledge

·         Provides an advance organizer

·         Pre-assess appropriate skills as necessary (diagnosis)

 

II.           Objective and Purpose

·         Communicates in student language the learning goal(s)

·         Motivates students (by explaining how lesson relates to real life)

Tell the students what it is you expect them to be able to do by the end of the lesson 
(announcing the objective of the lessos),
and what level of performance or culminating authentic activity you expect from them.
Students also want to know why this lesson (topic/theme) is important to
them and how it will be useful to them and others in real life
( announce the Purpose of the lesson).
Make a transition to the next part of the lesson.
III. Development(name a  model, strategy and methods used in the lesson).   "I DO IT"
Information Presentation, Demonstration, or Modeling (with Check for Understanding Throughout)                                                                                                       I DO IT!”

·         Explains, Models, or demonstrates information

·         Uses variety in presentation styles

·         Appeals to various learning styles

·         Uses verbal labels to point out key elements of examples

·         Provides the conceptual structure of information

·         Involves Learners actively after each chunk of information

 

Checking for Understanding (Active processing)                         

·         Is done periodically during information giving

·         Allows students to actively process information (write, talk, vote)

·         Provides information about student understanding of information presented

 

V.             Guided Practice                                      WE DO IT TOGETHER!”  

 

·         Allows students to gain mastery through Practice under the teacher’s guidance

·         Provides activities that match the objective(s) (congruence)

·         Allows teacher to monitor learning and adjust accordingly

 

VI.             Assessment (Provide three types of assessment methods: diagnostic, formative & summative)

·         Gathers information about individual mastery of the objective throughout the lesson

·         Helps teacher decide how to proceed with each student

VII.       CLOSURE Summing up what was learned during the lesson. Students are engaged in concluding what was learned during the lesson, showing the evidence of achieving the objective.

VIII.   Independent Practice or Re-teaching (for those still struggling) and /or Extension                                                                     YOU DO IT!”

·    Provides further practice to develop fluency/ automaticity, or

·        Extends learning  or

·        Attends to individual needs by re-teaching     

 

IX.   REFLECTION

             the teacher designs self-derected questions to all the steps of the DI strategy, to test the designed or selected materials, learning activities and answer the self-inquiry questions after the lesson is over.
