Examples of Measurable Objectives

Given ten sets of five pictures, four of which are related - belong to the same category, such as vegetables or tools – the student will point to the one in each set which does not belong, without error.

Students will correctly state temperatures, with an accuracy of + or - 1 degree, shown on pictures of five thermometers depicting temperatures between -20 degrees F. and 95 degrees F.

Given a grade level reading passage Randi will write correct answers to five/five inference questions

Given the fewest possible coins for four purchases, the student will return the change from $1.00, with no errors.

When the fire alarm sounds for a fire drill, students will form a line within thirty seconds and leave the building following the correct route, without teacher prompting.

Given the task to cover the wall with given dimensions Kathi and Chuck will correctly compute the amount of wallpaper needed.

When teased by peers, Jorge will respond by ignoring, walking away, or quietly asking the person to stop in eight out of eight observed opportunities by May 1.

Given independent seatwork assignments during class, Richard Michael will complete all of them

with at least 90% accuracy for two consecutive weeks.

 

Given a traditional clock set at a random 5 -minute increment and the direction, "What time is it?," the student will say the time using the form hour : minutes (e.g., 4:20 or 12:45) within 5 seconds for 6 consecutive trials with no prompts.

Exercise # 2

Re-construct the objectives according to the studied criteria:

Identify what is missing

Re-construct according to CBC format

Write objectives which describe learning outcomes, not activities or assignments (TenBrink, 1994, p. 58).

NOT: Wally will write spelling words missed on the pretest five times each.

NOT: Students in pairs will take turns throwing dice, adding the numbers together, and stating the total.

NOT: Students will play a quiz show game in which they divide into two teams and answer questions from Chapter 4 in the social studies book. Each team will ask questions to the other side.

NOT: Ben will write letters to the main character in the story.

Keep objectives clean and simple; save creativity for instruction.

NOT: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the reasons that bald eagles were endangered by graphing the average number of eagle babies born and the number of eagles who died per year for the last ten years.

NOT: Students will create a poster which demonstrates their knowledge of modern Mexican culture.

Be sure to write objectives which represent important learning outcomes!

NOT: Michelle will write the names of the counties in each state in the United States from memory with no error.
