3. Melissa Winfield: Emoticons: (symbols used to display feeling) Emoticons can be displayed in two different formats. They can be constructed using typographical editing symbols or they can be added as smiley's (or other graphic format).
Note: For these little things called "emoticons" Often the idea is to turn your head sideways, and it makes a picture on a lot of the smiley faces. ;-) for example where the ; (semi-colon) are the eyes, the - is the nose, and the ) is the mouth. Also, you see some people use the hyphen (-) to show the nose, while others will show the same expression without the nose. Example: ;-) and ;) signify the same thing.

If you want to translate a simple statement in Spanish, then this is the site your looking for. I personally don't use it since I am a fluent native Spanish-Speaker. I recommend this for TEACHERS that have English Language Learners in their classrooms and NEED TO COMMUNICATE WITH SPANISH FAMILIES. Try it, parents will appreciate it. This is a NECESSARY Tool for MONOlingual Educators.

Technology and Literacy
Literacy Matters provides you with up-to-date and practical information about why and how to use technology tools as an integral part of reading and writing instruction. The information is divided into three sub-sections:
Writing
Reading
Communicating
http://www.literacymatters.org/tech/intro.htm
Technology empowers students to access, manipulate, evaluate, and communicate information effectively. It should be used meaningfully by students to do real work. Technology is helpful in promoting student learning by addressing a variety of learning styles, providing thought provoking challenges, and encouraging higher level thinking. It offers students presentation options which engage the learner as well as the intended audience.

Amy's Picks
1.) www.coolmath4kids.com
This website can be used by students, parents, and teachers. It has so many fun learning games for students to use. Teachers can give students free time on the computer in their classroom and tell them which parts of the website they can use so that it is still fun yet corresponds to the math lesson for that week or the unit plan. Parents can also use it as a summer program for their child, and students love to use it because it's so much fun!
2.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfJETK3am1M
This video gives teachers a better understanding of why using a blog in their classroom is useful and why the students enjoy using it so much. It also gives great ideas on how to use blogs in classroom activities and projects. The video comes straight from the students themselves and the different uses of a blog they like the best.
3.) http://www.internet4classrooms.com/using_quest.htm
WebQuests can be a great tool to use in your classroom, but many teachers aren't sure exactly how to use them, which one to pick, and which website to use to find one. There are so many choices out there, and this website helps teachers narrow their choices and shows teachers how to successfully use the WebQuest in their classroom.
4.) http://www.knowwheretheygo.org
This is a great place for parents and teachers. It is important to teach children about safety on the internet and this is a helpful website to ensure children aren't going places they shouldn't be. We all know what kind of dangers there are on the internet and we should be keeping an eye on our students and we should be giving information to parents so they can keep and eye on their child at home as well.
5.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FiZ-JufeS0&feature=related
Cyberbullying is happening more and more in and out of classrooms because children can never get away from it. It makes it harder for the student to detatch themselves from the bullying since it can occur on the internet where it can be made public. Many children and young adults have lost their lives because of the intense cyberbullying that has occured. Teachers need to make sure students do not do this and students need to be informed of the consequences it may have. Parents should also be educated on the topic so they can watch for the signs that their child is being bullied and know how to help.
